Flow Cytometry/Cell Sorting Facility
Michael Gregory – Facility Director
Ellen Rothenberg – Faculty Advisor
The Caltech Flow Cytometry/Cell Sorting Facility is a multi-user facility which provides expert assistance and advanced instrumentation to researchers for analyzing and separating various types of cells and micro-organisms according to their measurable properties of light scatter and fluorescence.
The facility is currently equipped with three cell sorters: a Sony SY3200 (5-laser/9color (UV, 405, 488, 561, and 633nm)) cell sorter; a BD FACS Aria Fusion (4-laser/12 color (405nm, 488nm, 561 nm, and 640nm)); and a Beckman Coulter Cytoflex SRT (4-laser/14 color (405nm, 488nm, 561 nm, and 640nm)). All three sorters are contained within biosafety cabinets to allow for biohazardous cell sorting at BSL-2. The facility also houses two flow cytometers: a Miltenyi Biotec MACSQuant VYB, a 3 laser (405nm, 488nm, 561nm), eight-color non-sorting analyzer, and a Beckman Coulter Cytoflex a 4-laser (405nm, 488nm, 561nm, 638nm), a twelve-color non-sorting analyzer.
The mission of the Caltech Flow Cytometry Cell Sorting Facility is to foster scientific research by providing the expertise, state-of-the-art resources, and training necessary to solve complex biological problems and promote cutting edge research on a fee-for-service basis. The facility strives to provide cost effective analysis and cell separation on several different platforms using a myriad of protocols to enhance the scope and quality of scientific research performed at Caltech.
Here are the basic steps to request service:
· Fill out our biosafety form. Download it HERE.
· Send your completed biosafety form to cellsort@caltech.edu and mikeg@caltech.edu; mention that you are a new user and would like to use our facility for the first time
· We will then schedule a consultation and determine the proper instrumentation based on your experiment.
· After consultation, you will then be able to schedule your time directly with an operator for facility-run experiments or schedule your training on user-run instruments.
