Flow Cytometry/Cell Sorting Facility

Rochelle Diamond – Manager
Ellen Rothenberg – Faculty Advisor

The Caltech Flow Cytometry/Cell Sorting Facility is a multi-user facility which provides expert assistance and advanced instrumentation to researchers for analyzing and separating various types of cells and micro-organisms according to their measurable properties of light scatter and fluorescence.

The facility is currently equipped with three cell sorters: BD FACSAria IIu cell sorter, capable of analyzing at least 9 colors utilizing 3 lasers (407nm, 488nm, and 633nm), and of carrying out 4-way sorting up to 10,000 cells per second with reliable efficiency and recovery, or 1-way sorting for single-cell cloning into various cell culture plate configurations; a Sony SY3200 (5-laser/9color (UV, 405, 488, 561, and 633nm) cell sorter with one Highly Automated Parallel Sorting (HAPS) module contained in a Baker Sterilguard Advance Biosafety cabinet; a BDFACS Aria Fusion equipped with four lasers (405nm, 488nm, 561 nm, and 640nm). The facility also houses three flow cytometers: a Miltenyi Biotec MACSQuant VYB, a 3 laser (405nm, 488nm, 561nm), eight-color non-sorting analyzer and a BD FACSCalibur two-laser (488nm, 633nm) four-color non-sorting analyzer, and a Beckman Coulter Cytoflex.

The mission of the Caltech Flow Cytometry Cell Sorting Facility is to foster scientific research by providing the expertise, state-of-the-art resources, and training necessary to solve complex biological problems and promote cutting edge research on a fee-for-service basis. The facility strives to provide cost effective analysis and cell separation on several different platforms using a myriad of protocols to enhance the scope and quality of scientific research performed at Caltech.

We encourage investigators to consult with the facility prior to scheduling an appointment to assure the design of the experiment is compatible with the facility resources.
